What did Sufis write before Rumi? Before the great poetic masterpieces, there were careful, systematic treatises - maps of the soul drawn by the first architects of Islamic mysticism. These three texts are the missing link. They show you how the tradition understood itself at the very beginning.

This volume brings together three seminal works from the formative period of Sufism, translated into English by two of the most respected scholars in the field.

1. A Treatise on the Heart (Bayān al-Farq)
Attributed to al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī (d. 300/912), this text explores the subtle anatomy of the spiritual heart - its nature, its faculties, and its role in the knowledge of God. Al-Tirmidhī was one of the first Sufis to systematically articulate the distinction between the rational soul and the deeper organ of spiritual perception.

2. Stations of the Righteous (Darajāt al-Ṣādiqīn)
Written by Abū 'Abd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī (d. 412/1021), a towering figure in early Sufism, this work delineates the stations (maqāmāt) that the spiritual traveller passes through on the path to God. Each station - repentance, vigilance, trust, gratitude, and others - is explained with Qur'anic verses, Prophetic sayings, and the wisdom of early masters.

3. The Stumblings of Those Aspiring (Zalal al-Fuqarā)
Also by al-Sulamī, this treatise addresses the subtle pitfalls of the spiritual path: the ego's disguises, the temptations that assail the sincere seeker, and the discipline required to overcome the self that incites to evil.

Together, these texts form a comprehensive introduction to the interior landscape of classical Sufism - grounded in the Qur'an and Sunnah, yet reaching toward direct experience of the Divine.

Why We Love It:
At Kitab Markaz, we meet many readers who love Rumi but have no idea where Sufism actually came from. These texts are the answer. They represent Sufism before it became poetry - when it was still a science of the soul being hammered out by masters who walked close to the Prophetic example. Heer and Honerkamp's translations are luminous; they don't just translate words, they transmit the spiritual intent. This is the book we give to anyone who asks for the "real" Sufism - the kind that demands discipline, study, and transformation, not just inspiration.

About the Translators:
Nicholas Heer (1932–2017) was Professor Emeritus of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Washington. A scholar of extraordinary range, he specialized in Arabic philosophy, theology, and Sufism, and his translations are renowned for their precision and clarity.

Kenneth L. Honerkamp is Professor of Religion at the University of Georgia. A scholar of Sufism and Islamic thought, he has published extensively on al-Sulamī and the formative period of Sufism. His work combines rigorous philology with deep spiritual sensitivity.
