You know the Rubā‘iyyāt - those intoxicating quatrains about wine, love, and seizing the day. But the man who wrote them was also the greatest mathematician of his age, a philosopher who challenged orthodoxy, and a Sufi whose wine was wisdom itself. Who was Omar Khayyām, really?

The Wine of Wisdom is the first comprehensive study of Omar Khayyām (1048–1131) in English that treats him as a unified figure: philosopher, mathematician, scientist, and poet. For too long, the West has known Khayyām only through Edward FitzGerald’s Victorian translation of the Rubā‘iyyāt, which portrayed him as a hedonistic skeptic. Meanwhile, in the Islamic world, he was remembered primarily as a towering intellectual - the man who reformed the calendar, solved cubic equations, and wrote philosophical treatises that engaged with the deepest questions of existence.

Mehdi Aminrazavi reconstructs the life of this complex figure against the backdrop of 11th‑century Persia - a time of political turmoil, religious conflict, and extraordinary intellectual ferment. He explores Khayyām’s philosophical system, which drew on Avicenna yet pushed toward a mystical vision of reality. He examines the Rubā‘iyyāt not as drinking songs but as a sophisticated meditation on the human condition, written in a language that could be read on multiple levels. And he traces Khayyām’s afterlife in both East and West—his influence on Persian mysticism, his rediscovery by Western Romantics, and his enduring status as a symbol of intellectual freedom.

The book includes original translations of Khayyām’s philosophical works and a full version of FitzGerald’s famous translation, making it an essential resource for scholars and general readers alike.

Why We Love It:
At Kitab Markaz, we meet so many readers who love the Rubā‘iyyāt but know nothing about the man behind them. Aminrazavi’s book finally gives us the complete Khayyām - and he is far more fascinating than the popular caricature. Here is a thinker who dared to question orthodoxy, who advanced mathematics while composing mystical poetry, who lived a life of profound contradiction and made art of it. We love this book because it treats Khayyām as a serious philosopher, not just a romantic symbol. It’s the biography every fan of the Rubā‘iyyāt deserves.
