What if the most radical revolution of the modern world was not in Europe, but in the Caribbean? In 1791, enslaved Africans in San Domingo rose up against their oppressors, defeated three colonial empires, and founded the first free Black republic. This is the story of that revolution - and the man who led it.

The Black Jacobins is a landmark work of history, politics, and revolutionary storytelling. C. L. R. James, a Trinidadian historian and Marxist intellectual, traces the epic uprising that began in the French colony of San Domingo (present‑day Haiti) in 1791. Against the backdrop of the French Revolution, the enslaved population - inspired by the ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity - launched a revolt that would reshape the Atlantic world.

At the centre of the narrative is Toussaint L’Ouverture, a charismatic, barely literate former slave who rose to become the movement’s military and political genius. James shows how Toussaint outmanoeuvred the French, Spanish, and British forces that sought to crush the rebellion, and how he began building a society free from slavery. The revolution culminated in 1804 with the establishment of Haiti as the first independent Black nation and the only successful slave revolt in history.

James writes with the urgency of a participant and the depth of a scholar, weaving together military history, political analysis, and the lives of ordinary people. The Black Jacobins remains essential reading for understanding colonialism, resistance, and the enduring struggle for freedom.
