What does it mean to be a “friend of God”? How does sainthood relate to prophethood? And why did Ibn ʿArabī claim that he was the “Seal of the Saints”- a title echoing that of the Prophet as the Seal of the Prophets? This book unlocks the door to these mysteries.
Seal of the Saints is Michel Chodkiewicz’s landmark study of Ibn ʿArabī’s doctrine of sainthood (wilāya). For centuries, the Shaykh al‑Akbar’s teachings on this subject remained veiled, scattered across his vast corpus. Chodkiewicz systematically reconstructs the theory, showing that sainthood is not a marginal topic but the very axis around which Ibn ʿArabī’s spiritual cosmology turns.
The book begins by clarifying the distinction - and the inseparable link - between prophethood (nubuwwa) and sainthood (wilāya). Drawing on the Futūḥāt al‑Makkiyya and the Fuṣūṣ al‑Ḥikam, Chodkiewicz demonstrates how Ibn ʿArabī reinterprets the tradition of “prophetic inheritance”: each saint inherits a specific quality of a prophet, and the saints collectively form a hierarchy culminating in a single figure - the “Seal of the Saints” who completes the cycle of sainthood just as Muhammad PBUH completed the cycle of prophecy.
Beyond theoretical exposition, Chodkiewicz explores the practical implications: the function of saints in the world, the nature of their knowledge, and the relationship between esoteric guidance and exoteric law. The result is a work of breathtaking scholarship that illuminates one of the most profound dimensions of Islamic mysticism.
Why We Love It:
At Kitab Markaz, we consider Seal of the Saints an indispensable companion to reading Ibn ʿArabī himself. Without understanding his teaching on sainthood, the whole edifice of his thought remains incomplete. Chodkiewicz - a French Catholic who became a master of Islamic spirituality - brings to this study a rare combination of philological rigor and spiritual insight. His prose is clear without oversimplifying, profound without becoming obscure. We recommend this book to every serious student of Sufism, and we keep it on our own shelves as a constant reference. It is scholarship at its finest: illuminating, trustworthy, and transformative.
