You've heard Rumi is the best-selling poet in America. You've seen his quotes on walls and social media. But the real Rumi - the one who spins galaxies out of longing, who makes God sound like a lover and the soul like a reed cut from its reed bed—has been waiting for you. This is the door.

Rumi Poet and Mystic is not another collection of "inspiring quotes." It is a carefully curated selection from the greatest works of Jalal al-Din Rumi - the Masnavi, the Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi, and other writings - translated by Reynold A. Nicholson, the finest Western scholar of Sufism in his generation.

Nicholson spent a lifetime immersed in Rumi's universe. His translations are neither loose paraphrases nor dry literal renderings. They are delicately rhythmical versions that preserve the music of the original while making the meaning clear to English readers. This volume brings together over a hundred short passages, each with a brief explanatory note that illuminates the context and deeper significance.

Here you will encounter Rumi's central themes: the soul's separation from its divine source, the transformative power of love, the spiritual role of the master (shaykh), the illusion of the self, and the ultimate unity behind all apparent multiplicity. Whether you are discovering Rumi for the first time or returning to him after years, this collection offers a reliable entry point into the mind of the Persian mystical genius.

Why We Love It:
Most English "Rumi" today is actually watered‑down pop spirituality - verses stripped of their Islamic context, flattened into self‑help. Nicholson's Rumi is the real thing. He worked directly from the Persian manuscripts and understood that Rumi was not a generic mystic but a Sufi master rooted in the Qur'an and the tradition of the Prophet ﷺ. At Kitab Markaz, we treasure this book because it treats Rumi with the seriousness he deserves while remaining accessible. It's the version we give friends who ask, "Where should I start with Rumi?" And they always come back thanking us.

About the Author:
Reynold Alleyne Nicholson (1868–1945) was a British scholar of Arabic and Persian, widely regarded as the greatest Western Sufi specialist of his era. He held the Sir Thomas Adams's Chair of Arabic at Cambridge University for over two decades. His monumental eight‑volume critical edition and translation of Rumi's Masnavi remains the standard reference work. Nicholson combined exacting scholarship with genuine literary sensitivity; his translations of Persian poetry are considered poetic achievements in their own right. Though he never traveled outside Europe, his deep understanding of Islam and the Muslim peoples made him a bridge between East and West. This collection, published shortly before his death, distills a lifetime of engagement with Rumi.
