Nawaz Sharif holds the special record of being elected Pakistan’s Prime Minister three times – but each time, he was forced out of office early. He won his third term in the 2013 elections.
However, he faced constant clashes with the military, partly due to old grudges. Sharif couldn’t forget how he was arrested and put on trial after the 1999 military coup, when General Musharraf overthrew him.
Tensions grew worse when Sharif tried to put Musharraf on trial for treason. These government vs. military conflicts dominated Pakistan’s politics during his rule. Finally, his career collapsed due to the Panama Papers scandal (leaked documents revealing hidden wealth). This scandal also shifted power between different parts of the government, reshaping Pakistan’s politics.
