Have you ever felt like something is stirring inside you - an urge to create, to write, to make something true - but you don't know where to begin? Or worse, you've begun, and now you're drowning in doubt?
In 1902, a 19-year-old military student named Franz Kappus felt exactly that. He wanted to be a poet, but the world kept telling him to be practical. So he wrote to a famous poet he'd never met, asking for advice. He expected a polite dismissal. Instead, he received the first of ten letters that would shape the rest of his life.
Letters to a Young Poet is that correspondence - Rainer Maria Rilke's gentle, profound answers to a stranger who asked for help and ended up receiving a philosophy for living.
Here's what makes this tiny book so powerful: Rilke never tells Kappus what to do. He never says, "Here's how to write a poem" or "Here's how to get published." Instead, he goes deeper. Much deeper.
He tells the young poet:
- "Go into yourself." Don't look outside for validation. Look inside. Ask yourself: Must I write? If you can live without writing, then don't write. But if you must, then build your entire life around that necessity.
- "Live your questions now." Don't chase answers like they're lost keys. Live the questions themselves. Perhaps you will gradually, without noticing it, live your way into the answer.
- "Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart." Try to love the questions themselves. Don't search for answers that can't be given. The point is to live everything. Live the questions now.
- "Love your solitude." Don't flee from it. Carry it with you. The person who cannot be alone cannot truly meet another.
For the Pakistani reader picking up this book - whether you're a [poet yourself](link to poetry collection), a student navigating life's uncertainties, or someone searching for books that speak to the soul - Rilke becomes a friend you didn't know you needed.
The letters were written over a century ago, in German, to a stranger. Yet open this book anywhere today, in Lahore or Karachi or Islamabad, and Rilke will be talking directly to you. About your work. Your fears. Your loneliness. Your longing to matter.
That's the mark of a classic. It doesn't age. It just waits for the right reader to find it.
