MYTH OF THE PAKISTANI MIDDLE-CLASS
During the global rise of populist leaders over the last decade, Imran Khan became Pakistan’s most prominent populist figure. While he never gained the same worldwide fame as leaders like Donald Trump, Narendra Modi, or Jair Bolsonaro, Khan was part of the same populist wave that began around 2010.
In his book Imran Khan: Myth of the Pakistani Middle-Class, Nadeem Farooq Paracha investigates why Khan rose to power and later faced a dramatic downfall. The book also studies Khan’s main supporters – Pakistan’s urban middle class. Paracha argues that this group often hurts its own interests by repeatedly backing authoritarian “strongmen” leaders instead of policies that truly benefit them.
