For over five millennia, the lands that make up Pakistan have been defended by some of the world’s most remarkable strongholds – from the mud‑brick citadels of the Indus Valley to the towering Muslim forts of the Mughal era. A distinguished archaeologist and curator guides you through more than a hundred of these silent sentinels.
Written by one of Pakistan’s foremost authorities on its cultural heritage, this book is a comprehensive yet highly accessible guide to the country’s rich tradition of fortification. Spanning roughly 5,000 years, Forts of Pakistan examines the evolution of military architecture from the earliest Harappan defences to the formidable Muslim strongholds of the medieval period.
Ihsan H. Nadiem draws on Mughal court chronicles, British colonial gazetteers, and his own decades of archaeological fieldwork to bring these structures to life. The book is organised chronologically and thematically, covering the fortresses of Gandhara, the Hindu‑Shahiya period, the impact of the first Muslim waves, and the great Muslim‑era forts such as Rohtas Fort, Lahore Fort, Ranikot Fort, and many others.
With more than 100 forts presented in clear, non‑technical language, Nadiem avoids academic jargon while still providing the historical and architectural context needed to understand why these structures were built and how they shaped the history of the region. A 142‑page hardback (ISBN 969‑503‑352‑0) published in Lahore, in 2004, this volume is richly illustrated with colour photographs and maps.
