Before Rumi, before Ibn ‘Arabī, there were the pioneers - men and women who tasted the divine in the desert nights of Basra and Baghdad. This collection brings you their voices: Ḥasan al-Baṣrī’s tears, Rābi‘a’s burning love, the ecstatic cries of Bāyazīd, and the Prophet’s ascension through the heavens.
Early Islamic Mysticism is a carefully crafted anthology that traces the development of Islamic spirituality from its Qur’ānic origins through the classical Sufi masters. Michael Sells, a scholar of Arabic literature and early Sufism, selects and translates key texts that reveal the inner dimensions of Islam.
The book is organized in four phases:
- The Pre‑Sufi Phase: Includes selections from the Qur’ān that later became the foundation of mystical interpretation, the central ritual practices (prayer, fasting), and the accounts of the Prophet Muḥammad’s night journey and ascension (Mi‘rāj) - a narrative that became a template for the soul’s journey to God.
- The Early Sufi Masters: Presents the sayings and teachings of figures such as Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (d. 728), Rābi‘a al-‘Adawiyya (d. 801), Dhū l-Nūn al-Miṣrī, Abū Yazīd al-Bisṭāmī, al-Muḥāsibī, and al-Junayd al-Baghdādī. Many of these texts survive only in later compilations, and Sells’ translations make them accessible with remarkable poetic sensitivity.
- Theological and Poetic Writings: Includes reflections on the nature of divine love, the stations of the path, and early Sufi poetry that anticipates the great mystical verse of later centuries.
- Appendices and Commentary: Sells provides extensive introductions and notes that situate each text in its historical and spiritual context, making the volume suitable for both classroom use and independent study.
Why We Love It:
At [Store Name], we treasure books that bring primary sources to life - and Sells does exactly that. His translations are not dry academic renderings; they pulse with the urgency of the original Arabic. We love how he lets the early voices speak without forcing them into later categories. The chapter on Rābi‘a is especially moving: her love for God, so radical for her time, still burns off the page. This is the book we give to students of Sufism who want to go beyond secondary summaries and encounter the first mystics of Islam in their own words. It’s an indispensable companion for anyone serious about the tradition.
