A multigenerational masterpiece from the author of The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. And the Mountains Echoed is a profoundly moving epic that spans decades and continents, exploring the intricate bonds of family, the pain of sacrifice, and the haunting power of memory. Prepare to be captivated by a story that will stay with you long after the final page.

What is And the Mountains Echoed about?
The story begins in the winter of 1952 in the remote village of Shadbagh, Afghanistan. Abdullah, a ten-year-old boy, adores his three-year-old sister, Pari. Their bond is unbreakable. But a heartbreaking decision made by their father, driven by poverty and desperation, tears them apart. Pari is sold to a wealthy childless couple in Kabul, and Abdullah is left with a wound that never heals.

From this devastating central act, Hosseini weaves a sprawling tapestry of interconnected lives. The narrative moves from Afghanistan to Paris, from Greece to America, and across two generations. We meet a brooding stepmother, a jilted cousin, a family seeking asylum, and an aging matriarch forced to confront a long-buried secret. Each character is touched by the echoes of that original sacrifice, demonstrating how a single act of love - or betrayal - can ripple across time and distance.

Why readers are moved by this book:

  • Heart-shattering family bonds that capture the profound, painful love between siblings and parent and child
  • Rich, poetic prose that paints vivid pictures of Afghan landscapes and Parisian apartments
  • Unforgettable characters that make you feel deeply for every flawed, human soul
  • A poignant exploration of displacement, identity, and the immigrant experience

Who should read this book?
If you loved The Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns, this is a must-read. Perfect for fans of literary fiction that deals with deep emotional truths and complex family dynamics.
